Whether a flood in your home is caused by water from the ground, sky, or a malfunctioning system in your home, there are a few things to do within the first 24 hours.

AVOID RISKS

If you must leave your house, you need to ensure that it will be safe for your return. It is important that you check your home for warping, cracks in foundation, or holes. You must also contact the local utility departments if you think there is any to your utility lines. It is important to keep a flashlight with you and turn off all water and electrical sources.

PROTECTING YOUR HEALTH

If the water you are seeing is clear, that does not mean that it is clean. The water you are standing in could be contaminated with sewage or chemicals. It is important to wear waterproof boots, and waders if you are having to walk through water.

CALL YOUR INSURANCE

Make sure you have taken pictures of the damage. You should notify your agent as soon as you can after the flood occurs. It would be good to keep your agent’s number in your phone.
